The gods fired a shot
It rang all through the land
It took my heart with it
It left blood on Daddy’s hands

War filled hearts and homes
They were right on course
Two kingdoms would fall
Their fate carried by the back of a horse

I woke up to a moonlit room
My feet brushed the floor
I heard a moan, something gasped for air
I pressed my ear to Daddy’s door

Screams from a wounded beast
Pierced my bones in the midnight light
And I saw him through cracks in the wood
I guess I’d never heard a grown man cry

Reaching for the door but my feet moved away
Until they hit cold grass
And over the sound of my own heart beat
I didn’t hear the footsteps

One shot
Left the night red hot
I wasn’t dressed
For a funeral

Aim low and let go
Watch your ship sail away
Is all fair in pride and war
Now that love is in her grave?

I painted the grass red
And his heart black
I knew the man I loved
Was never coming back

And as I watched the life
Fade from Daddy’s eyes
I wondered which one of us
Was really dying that night

I never knew a woman’s love
Could tear so many lives apart
I don’t know what she was
But it was cold and it was dark

And if such a woman
Ever visits my grave
Don’t beg forgiveness
I have the peace that she craves
